Using Ramen to Runway in a personal finance class
Free, private, and nothing to set up. There are no accounts and no logins. Everything a student enters stays on their own device, so there’s no student data for anyone to collect or store.
What students can do in one class period
- Budget a paycheck. Setup takes about a minute: a paycheck, a few bills, and a bank balance, real or made up. The app answers one question: how much is safe to spend before the next payday?
- Find a student price. Add a subscription or two and see which ones cost less for students.
- Split rent with roommates. Add a shared cost and see who owes who.
- Invest pretend money. The Practice lab trades at real prices and compares each student with just buying an S&P 500 fund on day one.
- Take a lesson. 37 lessons of two or three minutes each, with one quiz question apiece and a link to the official page each was checked against: budgeting, credit, FAFSA and financial aid, taxes, first jobs and internships, investing, gold and silver, and spotting scams. The Learn tab puts the ones that fit the time of year first.
A sample week, 20 minutes a day
- Safe to spend. Set up a paycheck and bills, then talk about why the number shrinks as payday gets closer.
- Bills and subscriptions. Add up a year of subscriptions, and look for student prices.
- Cards and loans. Card utilization, and what student loan interest does while you’re in school.
- The Practice lab. Start a class challenge, then compare with the S&P 500 fund two weeks later.
- A first job. Paychecks, gig income, and how much to set aside for taxes.
Sample data
Share the sample data link so students can explore a made-up college student’s money without typing anything in. Nothing they change there is saved.
